PANCHKULA: A fraud in the recurring deposit (RD) accounts of the Sector 8 post office here has reached R32 lakh, an official said Saturday. The department came up with the figure after checking the accounts of 295 passbooks recovered from Mamta Gupta, an agent at the post office, in October, assistant superintendent of post offices RP Kabir said.

He said they had already recovered R27 lakh. Asked about other postal officials' involvement, he said they were yet to look into that angle. Gupta, who used to earn a commission for depositing the account holders' money at post office, was arrested for siphoning off the monthly RD instalments of customers.

The matter came to light when some depositors approached the post office, saying that though, their deposits had matured, some instalments weren't deposited. She used to collect monthly instalments from depositors and allegedly, with the help of post office officials, got the passbooks stamped to show that the money had been deposited. THE LOOPHOLE Postal department officials take a month, or more in some cases, to make entries regarding monthly instalments, whereas passbooks are stamped at the time when the money is deposited. Now, account holders have alleged that officials let agents stamp the passbooks.
