PNB to face ONGC for hockey ti­tle

CHANDIGARH: Pun­jab Na­tional Bank (PNB) and Oil and Nat­u­ral Gas Cor­po­ra­tion (ONGC) won their re­spec­tive semi­fi­nal en­coun­ters to set up the ti­tle clash in the 42nd SN Vohra’s al­lIn­dia Gur­mit Me­mo­rial Hockey Tour­na­ment, here on Satur­day.

In the first of the two semi­fi­nals played at the Sec­tor-42 Hockey Sta­dium, PNB de­feated In­dian Oil Cor­po­ra­tion (IOC), 3-2. PNB drew first blood when Ajitesh Roy’s fourth-minute strike put the side 1-0 ahead. But 18 min­utes later, IOC found the equaliser through Deepak Thakur’s penalty cor­ner con­ver­sion. PNB again found them­selves in lead as Jatin­der (25th minute) made it 2-1 through the penalty cor­ner. They main­tained this ad­van­tage till the half time.

Af­ter the break, Deepak Thakur again brought IOC back into the game by scor­ing a goal in the 50th minute of play.

But Yud­vir’s cor­ner con­ver­sion a minute later sealed the mat­ter in favour of PNB, as they walked home with a 3-2 win.

In other riv­et­ing en­counter of the day, ONGC de­feated Pun­jab & Sind Bank, 4-3, on penal­ties. In the reg­u­la­tion time, the two sides were locked at 1-1.
