PNB to face ONGC for hockey title
CHANDIGARH: Punjab National Bank (PNB) and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) won their respective semifinal encounters to set up the title clash in the 42nd SN Vohra’s allIndia Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament, here on Saturday.
In the first of the two semifinals played at the Sector-42 Hockey Stadium, PNB defeated Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), 3-2. PNB drew first blood when Ajitesh Roy’s fourth-minute strike put the side 1-0 ahead. But 18 minutes later, IOC found the equaliser through Deepak Thakur’s penalty corner conversion. PNB again found themselves in lead as Jatinder (25th minute) made it 2-1 through the penalty corner. They maintained this advantage till the half time.
After the break, Deepak Thakur again brought IOC back into the game by scoring a goal in the 50th minute of play.
But Yudvir’s corner conversion a minute later sealed the matter in favour of PNB, as they walked home with a 3-2 win.
In other riveting encounter of the day, ONGC defeated Punjab & Sind Bank, 4-3, on penalties. In the regulation time, the two sides were locked at 1-1.
