SC panel to summon Batala cops

Hindustan Times (Chandigarh) - - PUNJAB HINDUSTANTIMES - Vishal Sally

BATALA:TAKING cognisance of the news report published in Hindustan Times about a missing Dalit man who was allegedly thrashed by his landlord in a Batala village, the state commission for Scheduled Castes (SC) has decided to summon the Batala police officials for their failure to trace the man even after seven days.

Talking to HT, SC commission chairperson Rajesh Bagha said that he will summon the police officials and will recommend strict action against them.

“It was unfortunate that the victim was beaten up by his landlord in public and a video of the entire episode was put on social networking sites. Rather than taking action against the accused, the police showed laxity,” he said.

“I will raise the matter with senior officials of Punjab Police and will seek strict action against the guilty officials,” Bhagga said.

The police, however, have registered a case under the Sections 341(punishment for wrongful restraint), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons) of the Indian Penal Code against Deba’s brothers Happy and Vicky but did not name Deba Singh, the landlord, in the first information report (FIR).
