VB NABBED 18 OF­FI­CIALS IN BRIBERY CASES LAST MONTH

CHANDI­GARH: The Pun­jab Vig­i­lance Bu­reau (VB) caught 18 of­fi­cials, in­clud­ing seven po­lice per­son­nel and 11 be­long­ing to rev­enue and other de­part­ments, red­handed while they were ac­cept­ing bribe in Septem­ber.

A VB spokesper­son said the bu­reau had sub­mit­ted 12 chal­lans in spe­cial courts in Septem­ber. Apart from this, four vig­i­lance en­quiries were also reg­is­tered to probe the cor­rup­tion cases against pub­lic ser­vants and five crim­i­nal cases have been reg­is­tered af­ter probe.

Giv­ing de­tails, the spokesper­son said spe­cial courts de­cided four bribery cases. Deepak Khanna, a clerk posted at Ayurvedic Col­lege and Hospi­tal, Hoshiarpur, was con­victed and sen­tenced to two-year im­pris­on­ment with fine of ₹5,000 by the ad­di­tional ses­sions judge, Hoshiarpur. Pawan Ku­mar, as­sis­tant en­gi­neer in the block de­vel­op­ment and pan­chayat of­fi­cer (BDPO) of­fice at Bud­ladha in Mansa was awarded four-year im­pris­on­ment with fine of ₹50,000 by the ad­di­tional ses­sions judge, Mansa.

Sim­i­larly, Tej Ku­mar Goyal, joint sec­re­tary, wel­fare depart­ment, was sen­tenced to three years in jail with fine of ₹12,000 by the ad­di­tional ses­sions judge, Mo­hali, the spokesper­son said.
