Asha work­ers protest for salary hike, court ar­rest

Kar­nal:con­tin­u­ing their protest for hike in monthly hon­o­rar­ium, hun­dreds of Asha (Ac­cred­ited so­cial health ac­tivist) work­ers on Tues­day courted ar­rest in Kar­nal and other places. The work­ers were protest­ing for the past 14 days in the city de­mand­ing a hike in monthly wages to ₹18,000 and reg­u­lar­i­sa­tion of their ser­vices.

The pro­test­ers staged a protest out­side the mini-sec­re­tar­iat, Kar­nal.

Af­ter the ar­rest the po­lice of­fi­cers took them in buses but they were re­leased later.

District president of the Asha Work­ers’ Union Sudesh Rani said they are be­ing forced to work at ₹1,000 per month and even they did not get the salary on time. She de­manded that ASHA work­ers should be given the sta­tus of govern­ment em­ploy­ees and fa­cil­i­ties equal to govern­ment em­ploy­ees.

The protest­ing Asha work­ers also got the sup­port cen­tral trade unions.
