SC asks J&K DGP to ensure safety of Srinagar woman
CHANDIGARH:THE Supreme Court has directed J&K director general of police (DGP) Dilbagh Singh to ensure safety of a Srinagar woman at a city shelter home.
The SC acted on the petition filed by her friend Seema Bhoria, seeking her release alleging that there was threat to life and liberty of the woman, who is a postgraduate from Kashmir University in Srinagar.
The court was told that her maternal uncle was sexually abusing the 26-year-old and her parents are forcing her to marry him.
The woman wrote to local authorities, following which she was rescued and initially kept at a shelter home in Anantnag and later shifted to a governmentrun orphanage in Srinagar. Now, police have connived with maternal uncle, who is an influential man, the court was told.
The SC while seeking response from DGP within two weeks has directed DGP to ensure safety of the woman.
