SC asks J&K DGP to en­sure safety of Sri­na­gar woman

CHANDI­GARH:THE Supreme Court has di­rected J&K di­rec­tor gen­eral of po­lice (DGP) Dil­bagh Singh to en­sure safety of a Sri­na­gar woman at a city shel­ter home.

The SC acted on the pe­ti­tion filed by her friend Seema Bho­ria, seek­ing her re­lease al­leg­ing that there was threat to life and lib­erty of the woman, who is a post­grad­u­ate from Kash­mir Univer­sity in Sri­na­gar.

The court was told that her ma­ter­nal un­cle was sex­u­ally abus­ing the 26-year-old and her par­ents are forc­ing her to marry him.

The woman wrote to lo­cal au­thor­i­ties, fol­low­ing which she was res­cued and ini­tially kept at a shel­ter home in Anant­nag and later shifted to a gov­ern­men­trun or­phan­age in Sri­na­gar. Now, po­lice have con­nived with ma­ter­nal un­cle, who is an in­flu­en­tial man, the court was told.

The SC while seek­ing re­sponse from DGP within two weeks has di­rected DGP to en­sure safety of the woman.
