LUCKNOW: AIMIM leader Qadeer Khan has been arrested and Congress leader Anup Patel has been booked for allegedly instigating two women from Amethi to attempt self-immolation in front of the Vidhan Bhawan in Lucknow, officials said on Sunday. Four Amethi police officials have also been suspended in connection with the case.

A 50-year-old woman and her 28-year-old daughter set themselves ablaze in front of Vidhan Bhawan on Friday evening due to a land dispute.

While the mother suffered over 80% burn injuries, the 28-year-old has suffered 30% burns, doctors at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee hospital said.

Two others, Asma and her son Sultan, have also been booked in the case, Lucknow commissioner of police (CP) Sujeet Pandey said. The two are related to the women.

According to police, the woman and her daughter had a land dispute with their neighbours in Amethi district on May 9. Two cross FIRS were filed in the connection, Pandey said.

Alleging that the police were favoring their neighbours, the women approached All India Majlis-e-ittehad-ul-muslimeen leader Khan in Amethi for help.

Later, they also met Patel, Pandey said. The women, the commissioner said, in their statements revealed that Khan and Patel had suggested that they attempt self-immolation to draw attention to their cause.

“It is a criminal conspiracy as part of which some people instigated them. A case has been registered against four people -- Asma, Sultan, Kadir Khan and Anoop Patel, in this regard,” he said. Asma and Sultan brought the two women to Lucknow for the purpose, he said. Asma has also been arrested, Pandey said. Meanwhile, Amethi superintendent of police (SP) Khyati Garg said that four police officials -- including station officer of Jaamo police station, a beat in-charge sub-inspector and two constables – have been suspended for negligence in the case.
