615 new Covid-19 cases push J&K patient tally to 17,920

SRINAGAR:JAMMU and Kashmir’s coronaviru­s tally reached 17,920 on Sunday as 615 more people tested positive for the disease, while seven deaths in the last 24 hours raised the Covid-19 death toll to 312, officials said.

Of the new positive cases, 479 were reported from Kashmir and 136 from the Jammu division. Among these, 145 patients have a travel history.

Officials said seven more people have succumbed to the virus– six in Kashmir and one in Jammu division.

With this, the death toll in the UT has risen to 312—289 fatalities in Kashmir and 23 in Jammu division to date. The total death toll crossed 300 on Saturday in 122 days after the first death was reported on March 26.

The UT, particular­ly Kashmir valley, is witnessing an increase in death toll and new cases for the past one month. Around 211 persons have died in July alone.

However, the officials said that the mortality rate was low in J&K as compared to the national average. “The UT has recorded a considerab­ly low mortality rate of 1.7% as against 2.4% in the country. The mortality rate in Jammu province is far low at 0.6% as against 2% in Kashmir,” an official spokesman said on Saturday.

Active cases in the UT stand at 7,680 after 411 more patients recovered on Sunday. A government spokespers­on said 41 people were discharged in the

Jammu division and 370 in Kashmir.

The number of people who have recovered since the first case emerged on March 9 has reached 9,928, taking the recovery rate to 55.4% on Sunday.

Of the total recoveries, 7,920 were cured in Kashmir while 2,008 in the Jammu division.

In Kashmir, the highest jump in cases was witnessed in Srinagar district where 209 more people tested positive followed by Budgam at 88 and Bandipora at 41. In Jammu division, the highest number of 37 cases were reported in Jammu district and 33 at Rajouri district.

To date, 3.54 lakh people have been enlisted for observatio­n — 44,429 in home quarantine, 7,680 in hospital isolation, 12 in hospital quarantine and 40,180 under home surveillan­ce. Besides these, 2.62 lakh people have completed their 28-day surveillan­ce period.

75-YEAR-OLD WOMAN DIES OF COVID IN JAMMU

A 75-year-old woman from Karan Bagh in Jammu district died of Covid 19 on Saturday taking the tally to 23 in the district. This is the third Corona casualty in Karan Bagh.

Dr Dara Singh, medical superinten­dent of government medical college and hospital said the woman was hospitalis­ed at Government Chest Diseases Hospital and she died of Covid 19 on late Saturday.

A police sub-inspector from Kupwara also died of the infection on Sunday.

The police official, who was suffering from severe pneumonia, hypertensi­on and type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, was referred to CD hospital from SMHS hospital.
