NEW DELHI: A 20-year-old woman was found dead inside a water park in southeast Delhi’s Kalindi Kunj on Saturday.

The victim, identified as Savita, died inside a pool at the bottom of a water slide.

Police said Savita was found unconscious in a pool that had a depth of around one-and-a-half feet on Saturday afternoon. Police suspect that the woman suffered a heart attack or an epileptic fit while sliding down.

Around noon, the police control room received a call from inside the water park made by one of Savita’s friends. The caller said that Savita was unconscious and not breathing. She was taken to Alshifa hospital in Jamia Nagar, where she was declared brought dead. Hospital authorities told police that there were no external injuries on the body.

Savita, who studied tailoring at a stitching unit run by an NGO in west Delhi’s Mohan Garden, had come to the park with a group of 80 friends. Savita’s friends told police that she was the last to slide down in one of the rides. While her friends were waiting for her at the other slide, they saw Savita floating in the water and assumed that she was playing. Minutes later, one of the guards saw Savita floating in the water too and rushed to her aid. Police suspect that she was in the water for around 5 minutes.

HT called on the phone numbers of the water park mentioned on various websites, but no one wished to comment.

“We have taken the statement of her friends. They have claimed that no one realized that the girl was dead. The water was one or one-and-a half-feet deep. She could not have died of drowning,” said an officer.

DCP (south east) Romil Baniya said, “We are probing how many guards were present. We are also waiting for the post mortem .”
