Cop dies of bul­let in­jury, fam­ily al­leges mur­der

A 54-year-old Delhi Po­lice head con­sta­ble died in mys­te­ri­ous cir­cum­stances with a bul­let in­jury in his neck out­side the Vi­jay Vi­har po­lice sta­tion in outer Delhi on Wed­nes­day night.

The fam­ily mem­bers of head con­sta­ble Ra­jesh Saini al­leged that he was mur­dered. The ini­tial probe into the in­ci­dent, how­ever, in­di­cated Saini al­legedly killed him­self with the ser­vice pis­tol of his col­league with whom he had gone for a smoke.

Ri­shipal, deputy com­mis­sioner of po­lice (Ro­hini), said they had reg­is­tered a case of mur­der af­ter Saini’s fam­ily mem­bers al­leged that he was mur­dered.

“The au­topsy will be con­ducted by a board of doc­tors. Ex­perts from the foren­sic science lab­o­ra­tory (FSL) were called to the in­ci­dent spot to col­lect im­por­tant ev­i­dence that will be use­ful in the probe,” said Ri­shipal.

On Thurs­day, the case was handed over to the crime branch for fur­ther probe. The crime branch was roped in be­cause the state­ments of the eye­wit­nesses were found con­tra­dic­tory.

A se­nior po­lice of­fi­cer said the in­ci­dent took place around 10.30 pm when Saini had gone out of the po­lice sta­tion to smoke af­ter re­turn­ing from a raid. Saini had al­ready sur­ren­dered his ser­vice pis­tol and am­mu­ni­tion to the malkhana (ar­moury). He had called out his col­league, a head con­sta­ble, to give him com­pany, said the of­fi­cer.

The other head con­sta­ble re­port­edly has told se­nior of­fi­cers that Saini gave him a cig­a­rette and al­legedly pulled out the ser­vice re­volver from his hol­ster and shot him­self. The bul­let pierced his neck. Some per­son­nel from the po­lice sta­tion rushed out af­ter hear­ing the gun­shot. They found Saini ly­ing in a pool of blood. “He was rushed to Baba Sa­heb Ambed­kar hos­pi­tal where doc­tors de­clared him brought dead,” said Ri­shipal.

Saini’s fam­ily mem­bers, how­ever, re­jected the sui­cide the­ory by al­leg­ing that some eye­wit­nesses told them that he was shot dead by his col­league fol­low­ing an al­ter­ca­tion. The ar­gu­ment re­port­edly started over mak­ing com­ments over the po­lice­man’s mous­tache.

Saini had joined the force in 1999 as a con­sta­ble and was ear­lier posted with the se­cu­rity unit. He was posted at the Vi­jay Vi­har po­lice sta­tion for the past two years. He is sur­vived by his wife, two sons, mother and three brothers.
