Sena leader’s SUV runs over 2 school­girls

PUNE: Two young school­girls died af­ter they were run over on Thurs­day morn­ing by a ve­hi­cle be­long­ing to Pappu Mane, a prom­i­nent leader of the Shiv Sena in Ma­ha­rash­tra’s Bara­mati re­gion.

Mane is now be­ing ques­tioned by the po­lice, who con­firmed that he was not in the car at the time of the ac­ci­dent.

The early-morn­ing ac­ci­dent trig­gered a protest from the lo­cals and the ve­hi­cle, which was in­volved in the ac­ci­dent, was set ablaze.

Sev­enth grader Sameek­sha Manoj Vitkar, 13, and eighth grader Divya Dnyanesh­war Pawar, 14, were on their way to school on the Bara­mati-mor­gaon road when they were fa­tally hit by the sports util­ity ve­hi­cle at around 7:30 am on Thurs­day.

Ad­di­tional su­per­in­ten­dent of po­lice of the re­gion rushed to the spot as an­gry res­i­dents started ag­i­tat­ing.

As­sis­tant po­lice in­spec­tor Kale said forces were at the scene to con­trol the crowd.

The po­lice still have to as­cer­tain and con­firm who was driv­ing the ve­hi­cle and who was in it at the time of the ac­ci­dent.

The law and or­der sit­u­a­tion in the area is un­der con­trol, the po­lice added.


The car was set on fire by vil­lagers af­ter it hit and killed 2 girls in Bara­mati, Ma­ha­rash­tra, on Thurs­day morn­ing.
