Russia says Trump is using ‘Cold War rhetoric’ on Cuba

-

The Russian foreign ministry criticised US President Donald Trump’s decision to freeze a detente with Cuba and his verbal attack on the Caribbean island’s leaders.

The ministry, in a statement released on Sunday, said, “The new line towards Cuba announced by Trump takes us back to already half-forgotten rhetoric in the style of the Cold War,” the ministry said.

Moscow maintains close ties with Havana, and in March had signed a deal to ship oil to Cuba for the first time in more than a decade.

‘US CANNOT LECTURE US ON HUMAN RIGHTS’

Havana hit back at Trump’s decision to roll back some portions of the Cuba deal over alleged human rights violations, saying the order “betrays a double standard”.

“We have deep concerns by the respect and the guaranties of the human rights in that country, where there is a large number of cases of murder, brutality and police abuse, particularly against the African Americans; the right to live is violated as a result of deaths by firearms,” the statement read.
