Cop dies of bullet injury, family alleges murder
NEW DELHI : A 54-year-old Delhi Police head constable died in mysterious circumstances with a bullet injury in his neck outside the Vijay Vihar police station in outer Delhi on Wednesday night.
The family members of head constable Rajesh Saini alleged that he was murdered. The initial probe into the incident, however, indicated Saini allegedly killed himself with the service pistol of his colleague with whom he had gone for a smoke.
Rishipal, deputy commissioner of police (Rohini), said they had registered a case of murder after Saini’s family members alleged that he was murdered.
“The autopsy will be conducted by a board of doctors. Experts from the forensic science laboratory (FSL) were called to the incident spot to collect important evidence that will be useful in the probe,” said Rishipal.
On Thursday, the case was handed over to the crime branch for further probe. The crime branch was roped in because the statements of the eyewitnesses were found contradictory.
A senior police officer said the incident took place around 10.30 pm when Saini had gone out of the police station to smoke after returning from a raid. Saini had already surrendered his service pistol and ammunition to the malkhana (armoury). He had called out his colleague, a head constable, to give him company, said the officer.
The other head constable reportedly has told senior officers that Saini gave him a cigarette and allegedly pulled out the service revolver from his holster and shot himself. The bullet pierced his neck. Some personnel from the police station rushed out after hearing the gunshot. They found Saini lying in a pool of blood. “He was rushed to Baba Saheb Ambedkar hospital where doctors declared him brought dead,” said Rishipal.
Saini’s family members, however, rejected the suicide theory by alleging that some eyewitnesses told them that he was shot dead by his colleague following an altercation. The argument reportedly started over making comments over the policeman’s moustache.
Saini had joined the force in 1999 as a constable and was earlier posted with the security unit. He was posted at the Vijay Vihar police station for the past two years. He is survived by his wife, two sons, mother and three brothers.
