Gurugram is nice, beautiful, and different from Delhi: Gracy Singh

Performing with a poise and elegance that is synonymous with her very name, actor Gracy Singh recently left the Capital’s audience in awe at her dance performance. The two-hour dance drama in Delhi and Gurugram saw Gracy and her troupe perform a blend of classical dance styles such as Odissi, Kathak, Bharatanatyam, and Manipuri.

Gracy says performing live is a “spiritual experience” for her. She explains the concept behind the choreography: “[The dance] depicts each and every place, which is symbolic of the divine love of Radha Krishna. A devotee travels through all the temples and describes the beauty of every place in Vrindavan, and why it’s known as heaven on earth.”

The Munnabhai MBBS (2003) actor was introduced to classical dance because of veteran actor, MP and danseuse Hema Malini. Sharing an anecdote, Gracy says, “I was always interested [in the form] as a child and learned it a little bit, but not properly followed it as a profession. I came to Mumbai (sic), and during Amanat’s (TV serial) shoot, I was introduced to Hema Malini. There I met Deepak ji (guru Deepak Mazumdar), who used to also compose for Hemaji’s shows. Along with acting I started learning and performing as well. Since then I have not left dancing,” says the actor, who formed her troupe in 2009.

Gracy’s role in Lagaan (2001) is etched in people’s hearts even today. And though stage projects keep her busy, she misses working in films. “I’m waiting for the right project. I will be back to acting next year,” she says, lauding today’s films. “Technically, it’s very different today. We are seeing very good filmmakers and confident actors,” she adds.

Gracy, who was born and brought up in Delhi, owns a house in Gurugram, and visits the city every two months to meet her niece and nephews. “My family shifted to Gurugram from Delhi two years back because of the studies of my sister’s children. They felt the surroundings were better. It’s very nice, beautiful place, different from Delhi, because of apartments and societies,” shares Gracy.
