These days, looks play an important role in relationships, and the same applies when it comes to arranged marriages, too. Dharmadhikari says, “Nowadays, people focus a lot on external appearances. So, instead of knowing a person, people judge a potential spouse on his or her looks.” He adds, “Also, people these days want a spouse, whose lifestyle matches their own. Though one can adapt to a lifestyle change post marriage, people don’t realise this and tend to make wrong decisions. Judging a potential spouse based on the family situation and not on the individual is also common.”

Relationship expert Vishnu Modi talks about an IT professional, Anand Kubra, who started looking for an arranged match after two breakups. But, once he started meeting potential spouses, he would mostly have issues with their families. For example, once he didn’t like the way someone’s father spoke to him and decided not to meet the woman again. But eventually, after his options started getting slimmer he realised this behaviour wasn’t helping his cause and changed his mindset.”
