Three soldiers killed in militant ambush in Assam

GUWAHATI: Three soldiers were killed and three others injured on Saturday in an ambush by suspected members of a hardline ULFA faction in Assam’s Tinsukia district, police said. This is the first major attack on security forces by banned United Liberation Front of Asom (Independence) in the state since the BJP-led government came to power in May.

SRINAGAR: Protests erupted in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district after a militant was killed by security forces in an encounter. Police officials said that a joint party of police, CRPF and army surrounded Begumbagh area near Kakapora in Pulwama. “The militant was killed just outside the house in a brief encounter. He seems to be a local,” Pulwama SSP Rayees Mohammad said. Residents said youth from the area started protesting and throwing stones after news spread that the militant was from Kakapora.
