`45 lakh in banned notes seized from Ludhiana man

Police seized `45-lakh unaccounte­d money from a jeweller’s employee in Ludhiana on Saturday. The accused was caught carrying money in two bags.

LUDHIANA: The police seized `45lakh unaccounte­d money from a local jeweller’s employee here on Saturday.

The accused, identified as Yogesh Kumar Chopra who works with Tripati Jewellers at Sarafan Bazar, was caught carrying money in two bags at the foot rest of his scooter near Khalsa College for Women at the Rani Jhansi road.

ASI Ashwani Kumar, incharge, traffic zone-3, said the cops stopped the accused as he not wearing a helmet. The man tried to flee from the spot but the policeman foiled his bid. “Yogesh even offered bribe to the cops for letting him go, but the latter did not accept it,” said the ASI.

“Yogesh told the police that the cash belongs to his employer and he was going to deposit it in the bank. He also produced a deposit slip of a bank on which only `45,000 was mentioned,” he added.

The ASI said the notes seized from the accused were in the denominati­on of `1,000 and `500. The police immediatel­y sounded the income tax (I-T) officials and handed over the cash to them, he added.
