DOWN WITH KHAP PANCHAYATS

The editorial ‘SC weighs in on the side of freedom of choice’ has derided the role of khap panchayats, who are guilty of killing many young couples in the name of honour. The worthy judges said, “If people decide to marry, they are adults and you are nobody to interfere.” Khaps enjoy political patronage. Many politicians too are against intercaste and inter-religion marriages. The apex court’s suggestion to neutralise the khaps before they do any further damage should be taken seriously.
