SKETCHING THE CULTURAL HERITAGE OF AWADH!
Architect, author and heritage activist Vipul B Varshney’s third book ‘Shaam-e-Awadh: A Visual Journey of Lucknow’ was released by singer Malini Awasthi during an event held here on Wednesday.
The highlights of the 140page book are different aspects of Lucknow – such as architecture, art and culture – in sketch form with precise content.
“I was always interested in sketching. It started with bits and pieces but I kept making them. It was random but the collection was going up with every passing year. Then I decided to convert them in the form of a book,” said Vipul during her conversation with moderator Chander Prakash at Universal Book Sellers, Gomti Nagar.
Some the sketches date back to her college days. The book, published by Bloombury, has 85 sketches.
Various facets of Lucknow are recorded here with the black and white pen sketches, through gateways, courtyards and gardens, along broad streets and narrow alleyways, into great ceremonial buildings and cosy medieval ‘chowks’ and ‘nukkads’. The splendour and grandeur of monuments are captured and enhanced with the beauty of the flora and fauna.
Another distinct feature of the book is that it has newer parts as well like Janeshwar Mishra Park’s gandola rides, Ambedkar Park, Lohia Park and Kudia Ghat.
Malini said the onus of being aware about the rich heritage and culture of our civilisation and passing it on to the next generation lay with the people.
Authors like Ravi Bhatt and Mehru Jaffar were also present in the talk session. There was also a debate on Abdul Halim Sharar, foreign authors and Indian writers who have penned books on Awadh. Vipul has earlier penned Lucknow-A Treasure and earlier this year she came up with Lucknow: A City of Culture and Heritage.
Prominent people of the city were also present in the event.
