Hindustan Times (Lucknow) - Live - - My City -

An anti tobacco campaign was held in the city, recently. Thanks to the awareness created by cancer specialist prof RA Badwe about the ill effects of tobacco and its negative social impact. Director at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Dr Badwe has been spearheading a war against tobacco. A team of doctors from thehospital including head and neck surgeon Dr Pankaj Chaturvedi and Dr Kailash Sharma, director academics were at the SSCI to evaluate the progress and provide guidelines for the redevelopment of the Institute. The firebrand Chief Minister and his colleague took this pledge on World Cancer Day in the presence of the TMH team along with the Honourable Vice Chancellor of KGMU, Prof MLB Bhatt who is also the director of SSCI, CG City. The stark reality of tobacco and tobacco products being the cause of more than 50% of cancers in the state of Uttar Pradesh is what probably prompted the to carry out this pledge. Considering that close to 100 million people have died because of tobacco consumption in the 20th Century and nearly a billion more likely to die in the 21st Century, the need to control and eventually ban the use of the killer product has been a big challenge for society. A top down approach is today necessary to curb the use of tobacco in society. CM’s action is probably the beginning in that direction. There is not a single reason listed in human history which talks about tobacco being safe and useful for humans.
