Staff crunch hits new emergency wing

LUCKNOW: Emergency patients had a difficult time finding doctors at the New Emergency Complex of the King George’s Medical University on Thursday. Reason: Being a holiday, there was hardly any staff to attend to injured and sick patients.

Moreover, since other hospitals such as civil and Balrampur do not have neuro-surgeons, the patients came directly to KGMU and the emergency became over crowded. The situation worsened, as there were only a few resident doctors and no senior consultants.

Sources said nearly twodozen patients had to wait on stretchers for several minutes before a doctor attended to them. Attendants of these patients were seen running from pillar to post trying to find resident doctors and nurses, who were already over burdened with patients.

However, senior university officials denied these claims.

“There was a sudden inflow of patients particularly for neuro surgery as other hospitals in the state capital were closed after half day. This caused a problem for sometime but was solved after we brought in additional nurses and resident doctors from different depart- ments,” said Dr SN Sankhwar, in charge of the emergency complex.

He said since most of the departments, including surgery, orthopaedic surgery and medicine, wore a deserted look since the morning, some patients were shifted to pre-operation ward and other rooms to make space for those on stretchers.
