LMC to hold spl camps for registration of pets

LUCKNOW: The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has decided to go from house-tohouse and organise special camps in every ward of the city for registration of pet animals.

The corporation’s chief veterinary officer Dr AK Rao said the first phase of the programme would include camps where pet owners could pay the registration fee and get a licence for the pet. “Residents don’t need to bring their pets. Just a vaccination certificate would suffice,” he said.

Rao said a survey by the LMC revealed that Lucknow households had more than 15,000 pet animals, mostly dogs, but only 2,100 had been issued licences. Two years ago, the corporation had started the exercise to catch unregistered pets and fine their owners. Sunny Yadav, a resident of Havelock road, Anup of Irrigation Colony, Ravi Kumar and Dinesh Chandra of Rajnikhand and Pradeep of South City became the first citizens to be slapped with a fine Rs 5000 each for keeping dog without a licence.

Dr Rao said the exercise had been started again in an effort to get pet animals registered in the city. He said most pet owners were easily given licenses. Only residents abusing animals by not providing sufficient food, water and living space or keeping them in dingy and unhygienic conditions were denied licences.
