Shiv Sena leader’s SUV runs over two schoolgirl­s; locals set vehicle ablaze

PUNE: Two schoolgirl­s died after they were run over on Thursday morning by a vehicle belonging to Pappu Mane, prominent Shiv Sena leader in Maharashtr­a’s Baramati.

The fatal mishap triggered protests from locals and the vehicle that killed the girls was set ablaze. Seventh grader Sameeksha Manoj Vitkar, 13, and eighth grader Divya Dnyaneshwa­r Pawar, 14, were on their way to school on the Baramati-Morgaon road when they were fatally hit by the sports utility vehicle at around 7:30am.

Mane is now being questioned by the police, who confirmed that he was not in the car at the time of the accident. Additional superinten­dent of police of the region rushed to the spot as residents started agitating. Assistant police inspector Kale said forces were at the scene to control the crowds. The police still have to ascertain and confirm who was driving the vehicle and in it at the time of the accident.
