NO IPL MATCHES IN LUCKNOW, KANPUR THIS SEASON
LUCKNOW: It’s officials that there will be no matches of the Indian Premier League this season in UP as none of the eight franchisees have shown interest in holding matches, both at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur and Ekana International Cricket Stadium here in the state capital.
The BCCI while announcing the fixtures of the 11th edition of the world’s most popular and competitive Twenty20 tournament on Wednesday didn’t mention any venue for the matches in the state. In all 48 matches will be played for over 51 days across 9 venues from April 7 to May 27. Kanpur’s Green Park stadium had witnessed the matches of the Gujarat Lions both in 2016 and 2017, and the Ekana stadium here was almost set to hosts at least two matches of the new season this time.
“I have no idea what went wrong with our stadium. Our stadium is fully ready to host an IPL match,” Ekana Sports City’s director Udai Sinha said soon after the announcement of the IPL fixture adding, “I still am hopeful of getting a few matches,” he added.
A team of the IPL management committee is expected to take a fresh look of the venue later this month. So far the BCCI has decided the venues of all matches, except an eliminator scheduled for May 23 and qualifier two, scheduled for May 25, and there is an outside chance for the venue here to be picked up for these two matches.
“It’s too early to say now about the venues of the two matches, but for now no franchisees have plans to conduct matches either at Kanpur or Lucknow,” a BCCI official said on condition of anonymity adding, “Non completion of the venue in Lucknow was one of the issues.”
Lucknow stadium has so far conducted five domestic matches even before its completion and owners of a few franchisees have already visited the venue during the last two months.
