LUCKNOW: Doctors at the King George’s Medical University (KGMU) removed a screw from the bronchus of a 10-year-old boy which he had swallowed around three years back.

The boy, Ayan, a native of Kaushambi, swallowed the screw three years ago but didn’t inform his parents fearing he will be beaten up. When the metal inside the body started causing health complications, Ayan’s parents took him to a doctor in Kaushambi.

The doctors could not identify the exact reason behind the complications and treated him for TB for the last two years. Later, a CT scan report confirmed that there was a screw in the child’s bronchus which was troubling him.

KGMU’s Dr Suresh, who performed the surgery, said, “Two years back, Ayan suffered from high fever and developed some breathing problem. His family took him to a local doctor who treated him for TB. When the treatment didn’t work, he was taken for a CT scan and ultrasound

and the screw was spotted.”

The doctor added that the screw had punctured and infected one of the lungs and only the other one was functioning.

“As the screw was inside for so long, tissues had covered it and that is why all attempts to take it out failed,” he said and added, “So, we had to open the bronchus to take the screw out.” The lung, which was damaged, was also functioning after the treatment, the doctor said.
