MP poll panel steps up vigil as election draws near

BHOPAL : The state election com­mis­sion is on an over­drive to en­sure free and fair polls in Mad­hya Pradesh. Its of­fi­cers have seized some 600 school bags de­pict­ing a min­is­ter’s name and photo and meant to be dis­trib­uted among vot­ers in Damoh dis­trict of Bun­delk­hand re­gion. In Ja­balpur, a case has been reg­is­tered against a BJP leg­is­la­tor and for­mer min­is­ter for dis­tribut­ing wrist watches among vot­ers al­most two months be­fore the polling. The com­mis­sion has also di­rected the dis­trict ad­min­is­tra­tion to tar and wipe out plaques, boards and hoard­ings dis­play­ing var­i­ous claims and ben­e­fits pro­vided by elected rep­re­sen­ta­tives to vot­ers. An EC of­fi­cials said even the tiles dis­play­ing pho­to­graphs of PM Modi and CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan in the houses con­structed un­der a cen­tral scheme for poor sec­tions will be painted. Since an­nounce­ment of polls on Oc­to­ber 6, the com­mis­sion has been re­ceiv­ing a large num­ber of com­plaints of model code vi­o­la­tions.
