HOW TO WIN A BOUT

-

KNOCKOUT:

This one is simple, a knockout of your opponent, that is he or she is unable to carry on within a count of 10. It’s the most spectator-friendly end to a bout, but for the loser the effect of a knockout could be both painful and demoralising.

TECHNICAL KNOCKOUT (TKO):

This is when the referee stops the fight because a boxer is incapable of continuing the fight without bringing serious harm to him or her. TKO is a safe end to a one-sided bout.

POINTS:

A bout will be decided on points if it goes the full distance. At the end, the three judges tally the points they have given to the boxers in each round. At least two of the judges should agree for a boxer to be a winner. If all three decide on the same winner as per the points they have individually given, the decision is said to be unanimous, or else split.

SCORING:

Professional boxing uses a 10-point system to judge each round. The winner of a round will be given 10 points, while the loser gets 9. A knockdown, or a lopsided loss in the round would cost the boxer a point. i.e. the loser will get 8 points. How a winner is decided is relatively an open condition. Clean punches, defence, aggression, and even ring generalship is taken into account. This open-ended clause is one of the reasons why professional boxers almost always prefer to fight on their home turf.
