While a truck driver has been arrested for the Jalandhar accident, driver of the car responsible for the Tarn Taran mishap has not been identified yet.

Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh had recently asked the transport department to pull up its socks to ensure strict compliance with existing rules and regulations to ensure safety on the roads.

Four people died after a speeding truck collided with a Mahindra Xylo, a multi-utility vehicle (MUV), at Rupewal village near Lohian, around 45km from Jalandhar city.

Nine other occupants of the Xylo were also injured and are undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

The deceased have been identified as Xylo driver Ranjit Singh (40), Parminder Kaur (54), Sukhdeep Singh (4) and Japdeep Singh, who was just 11 months old.

Shahkot station house officer (SHO) Rupinder Singh said the victims were travelling from Kapurthala to Moga to attend a private function when they met with an accident around 5.30pm.

“Truck driver Pradeep Kumar, who was heading towards Sultanpur Lodhi, lost control of the vehicle after crossing a speed breaker and collided with the Xylo,” said the SHO. “Both children died on the spot, while the two adults succumbed to their injuries later.”

The injured were rushed to the Shahkot and Nakodar civil hospitals, from where they were shifted to a private hospital in Jalandhar, he said.

The driver has been arrested. A case has been registered under Sections 304-A (causing death by negligence), 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of ₹50) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

In another accident, a 28-yearold man, his nephew and niece were killed after the bike they were travelling on was hit by a speeding car on the Tarn TaranPatti road near Kairon village, around 20km from the district headquarters, at noon.

Joga Singh of Lauhka village near Patti was on his way to drop his sister Gurmeet Kaur and her children — Sukhmandeep Singh (5) and Puneet Kaur (2) — at their house in Kalas village near Khemkaran.

While Joga and Sukhmandeep died on the spot, passersby rushed Gurmeet and Puneet to a nearby private hospital. While Puneet succumbed to her injuries, Gurmeet is reportedly struggling for life.

Driver of the Alto car (PB-49A-5336) involved in the accident managed to flee.

The car, which has also been badly damaged, bears the sticker of ‘Police’ on its windshield. It has been impounded.

“We are yet to identify the car driver,” said Patti Sadar station house officer Rajesh Kakkar. A case under Section 304-A of the IPC has been registered.
