2ND BREACH IN NINE DAYS DAMAGES CROP IN TARN TARAN

Hindustan Times (Patiala) - - Punjab -

The canal breach on Thursday, second within nine days, inundated around 200 acre crops in Sarhali and Bileyawala villages, 20 km from here. Following heavy rain the breach in Nikasu canal, starting from Dhariwall in Gurdaspur, flooded the paddy fields, nurseries and fodders.

“The Nikasu canal is not paved and our field is flooded every year in rainy season and when the department releases water,” said farmer Angrej Singh.

“Due to the negligence of the irrigation department the breach has occurred within nine days only. If the department had paid heed and cleaned the canal, the breach would not have occurred,” said another farmer.

The breach occurred in morning and was ploughed by farmers and the irrigation department staff . MLA Patti Harminder Singh Gill also reached the spot and assured the farmers that senior irrigation department officers had been directed to clean the canal and find a solution so that the farmers would not face the problem further.
