: Upset over not having a baby boy in the family, a woman in her fifties allegedly burnt private parts of her four-year-old granddaughter at Mojukhera village near Ding town in Haryana’s Sirsa district.

The victim is the third girl child of her parents.

The incident, which took place about 10 days ago, came to light on Friday after the district child protection committee officials received a tip-off about this.

The police, however, have registered a case under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act against an unidentified person and started investigation into the matter. The victim is receiving treatment at the Sirsa civil hospital.

Child protection committee official Geeta Kathuria said, “The victim’s grandmother wanted a baby boy in her family. After seeing the baby girl playing in front of her, she got angry and burnt the child’s private parts using a pair of hot tongs. We have taken up the matter with the police and they will take appropriate action in the case,” Kathuria said.

“The girl’s father is a labourer by profession. We summoned him on Thursday but he did not turn up. Then we visited the spot and rescued the girl and rushed her to hospital for treatment,” she said.
