The government’s recent decision of reducing excise duty on petrol and diesel is good but it seems motivated by elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. If this is not true, why is the Centre not telling the chief ministers of BJP-ruled states such as Haryana, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Assam to reduce taxes on fuel. ‘Modinomics’ also seems ineffective as he has been unable to teach his party’s chief ministers how not to depend heavily on taxes from petroleum products. That’s because the PM and his finance minister do not know. If the PM orders his party’s CMs to reduce state taxes on petrol and diesel, it will be a huge relief to most people because the BJP rules most states. Our rulers must remember that it is not the amount of tax collected that brings a change, it is how the collected amount is spent that does. If these taxes are not spent properly, even collecting 100 times more tax will be of no use. Sumeet Seth
