Health dept seals two il­le­gal bak­ery units

In a crack­down against poor qual­ity food be­ing sold ahead of fes­tive sea­son, the health de­part­ment of­fi­cials led by DHO Dr Lakhbir Singh Bhogowalia on Fri­day con­ducted raids at il­le­gal bak­ing units in the city.

The raid was con­ducted at two man­u­fac­tur­ing food units — Bi­j­nour Bak­ery at Chab­hal Road and Tan­veer Bak­ery at Lane 5 of Kot Khalsa — which were found to be run­ning il­le­gally.

The units had been man­u­fac­tur­ing bak­ery prod­ucts Food Safety and Stan­dards Author­ity of In­dia li­cense and reg­is­tra­tion, said a health of­fi­cial. “These bak­eries have been us­ing low qual­ity ghee, maida and cherry,” said Bhagowalia.

He said, “The equip­ment were in bad con­di­tions and moulds were seen on the buns and cream roll. As many 15,000 buns, 2,500 cream rolls and 2,000 bak­ery fans have been de­stroyed.” He said that five quin­tals of maida, one quin­tal of sugar and all the ma­chin­ery has also been seized.

“Nine sam­ples of bun, cream rolls, sugar, ghee and salt has been sub­mit­ted to the food test­ing lab in Kharar. The le­gal pro­ceed­ings will be done af­ter we re­ceive the re­ports,” he said.
