Health dept seals two illegal bakery units
In a crackdown against poor quality food being sold ahead of festive season, the health department officials led by DHO Dr Lakhbir Singh Bhogowalia on Friday conducted raids at illegal baking units in the city.
The raid was conducted at two manufacturing food units — Bijnour Bakery at Chabhal Road and Tanveer Bakery at Lane 5 of Kot Khalsa — which were found to be running illegally.
The units had been manufacturing bakery products Food Safety and Standards Authority of India license and registration, said a health official. “These bakeries have been using low quality ghee, maida and cherry,” said Bhagowalia.
He said, “The equipment were in bad conditions and moulds were seen on the buns and cream roll. As many 15,000 buns, 2,500 cream rolls and 2,000 bakery fans have been destroyed.” He said that five quintals of maida, one quintal of sugar and all the machinery has also been seized.
“Nine samples of bun, cream rolls, sugar, ghee and salt has been submitted to the food testing lab in Kharar. The legal proceedings will be done after we receive the reports,” he said.
