CAPT’S DGP CHOICE WAS ‘NO SECRET’
Chief minister
Captain Amarinder Singh
and his men fell back on oldest tricks to stump everyone, including 1985-batch IPS officer Mohd Mustafa, to elevate Dinkar Gupta, who belongs to 1987 batch, as the new police chief. If Mustafa is to be believed, chief secretary Karan Avtar Singh and then DGP Suresh Arora, who represented the state government in the UPSC meeting, “exceeded their brief and went overboard to get him excluded”. Then, the government created a smokescreen and misled the media by feeding wrong information about the names of police officers in the panel finalised by UPSC. As Mustafa was backed by the Congress high command, a top government functionary even told reporters that he was the frontrunner. All of this just to create confusion and keep everyone, including Mustafa and other aspirants, guessing. Though many in the Congress did not approve of such tricks, others say everything is fair in love and war. The CM’s choice for the much sought-after job was no secret from the start!
