Monika asks fans for 50lakh for LGBT video, gets slammed
Singer-actor Monica Dogra, who had asked her Facebook fans to crowdfund 50 lakh for a music video on the LGBT community last week, has been slammed on social media for trying to extract money in the name of a social cause. Sharif Rangnekar, an LGBT activist and a musician who recently made a video on the LGBT rights for “almost no cost”, tells us: “There are so many other things that can be done with that big an amount. You can fund queer parades and those NGOs that actually solve the problems faced by the LGBT community.”
However, Dogra justifies her campaign. “The money is not meant only for the music video. It’ll also be used to promote awareness and make a documentary about the issues faced by the LGBT community. Plus, we have to pay for the flights, stay and travel of the international production crew in India. It will be a very big project. This is the best I can do to raise awareness,” she says. The video will be choreographed by Ryan Heffington.
