In the latest buzz about Bollywood, Hrithik Roshan has agreed to star in director Vijay Krishna Acharya’s next project, which will have two leading ladies. And it’s not just Hrithik who will be featured with two stars in the same film — the coming months will witness many flicks featuring either two heroes or heroines.

So if Bajirao Mastani has Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra (alongside Ranveer Singh), Brothers will see Jacqueline Fernandez with Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra. Similarly, Shah Rukh Khan and Varun Dhawan will share screen space in Dilwale, and so will Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor in Rangoon. Also, Varun is working with John Abraham in Dishoom while Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (ADHM) stars Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Anushka Sharma (alongside Ranbir Kapoor).

Experts find it a ‘profitable’ alignment. “This has a direct impact on a film’s collections, as the fan bases of two stars get merged,” says exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi. “But you won’t know how many two- hero/ heroine projects the same actors must be saying no to,” says trade analyst Komal Nahta. He adds, “Also, it’s a cycle. So if solo hero films worked at one point, multi- starrers soon became a favourite. And now, it’s the turn of two heroes or heroines. I’m sure someone like Varun won’t mind if Shah Rukh gets a little more space in Dilwale than him.” Varun testifies that. Calling it an “amazing opportunity”, the actor says, “I am not insecure. I am so excited about working with SRK the actor.”

Although Bollywood has witnessed twin leads in yesteryear films such as Andaz ( 1949), Waqt ( 1965), Deewar ( 1975), Silsila ( 1981) and Karan Arjun ( 1995), late 90s onwards, such films became few and far in between. Filmmakers, on their part, insist they go by the requirement of the script. “The casting calls are fully script and character- driven,” says Karan Johar, director of ADHM.

Clockwise: Deepika-Priyanka, Kriti Sanon-Kajol and Shahid-Saif are some of the actor pairs that will be seen as leads in upcoming big-ticket flicks
