You can’t do anything in life without independence. You can’t even be yourself

Actors Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty, who are making their Bollywood debut soon, are both set to celebrate the country’s 69th Independence Day today. Asked what freedom means to them, 25-year-old Sooraj says, it stands for “everything”, while the 22-year-old Athiya adds, “Freedom is about equality.”

Sooraj, who will be seen playing a tough guy in his first film, says that he holds nothing more important in life than freedom. “You can’t do anything in life without independence. You can’t even be yourself.”

Athiya, who is actor Suneil Shetty’s daughter, says that in India, independence should be about gender equality. “Freedom, especially in our country, has to be about equality — mainly between men and women in terms of education, work, and even basic concept of independence.”

Excited about their film, the duo say they are looking forward to a great inning in the film industry. “There are young actors and new directors in Bollywood currently. There’s also the freedom to take up fresh, different ideas and stories. All of us (in the industry) are doing our share of hard work, and we are seeing great results,” says Sooraj. Athiya adds, “I am my father’s daughter, and I won’t put it any other way, because I know it (his connections) has helped me bag the film. But I know that after this, my hard work and skills will speak for themselves.”
