Spring blooms on the Capital runways
A five-day-long fashion showcase kicks off in the city today. Here are some highlights
Spring/summer is back on the runway as the Capital gets back into fashion-mode. This time, the location of the Amazon India Fashion Week shifts from the staple venue, Pragati Maidan, to NSIC Grounds in Okhla, where over a hundred designers will showcase their collections via ramp shows and stalls. There’s also an element of newness, thanks to not only the locale, but exhibits, installations, fashion talks and a finale made of 16 designers.
Today, the five-day-long event starts with designer Sanjay Garg and ends with an offsite show by swimwear mavericks, designer duo Shivan and Narresh. Their preview images give us a glimpse of signature play with sexy cut-outs and teasing maillots. The first day will also include a show by designer Kavita Bhartia, with her collection which will include ensembles in shades of beige, tiffany blue, mint green and white, focussing on the re-interpretation of traditional ikat. Tomorrow, label Dev R Nil will showcase designs inspired by the “Spirit of the hippies, 60s revolution and liberation.” Designer Anand Bhushan will also showcase his collection that takes its character from the spirit of the tennis court.
Called Deuce, the line will include the surprise use of leather for summer. “The shapes take cue from retro sports apparels with polo T-shirt dress details, classic herringbone graphic, pleated skirts and dinky tennis dresses,” Bhushan explains.
Known for dressing up women in powersuits and championing androgyny, designer Ashish N Soni will conclude Day 2. “I was influenced by the women around me, from cool girls on the street to modern-day icons who have managed to retain their inner child,” Soni says.
Day 3 will also be super buzzy, with designers Nida Mahmood, Anupama Dayal and Payal Jain showcasing among many others, and Kolkata-based Anamika Khanna concluding the day. While the penultimate day at fashion week will see designer Aneeth Arora, designer duo Gauri and Nainika Karan and Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna take over the ramp, on Sunday, The Grand Finale will see a collective celebration of Benarsi handloom.
