‘I was eve teased during my college days in Delhi’
Says singer Neeti Mohan who shares how she wants Delhi to be a safer place for women
Playback singer Neeti Mohan (left), who hails from Delhi, says that she would want to see the Capital become a safe city for women. “Unlike Mumbai, where it is quite safe even if we are going out for work late night, women’s safety is a serious issue in Delhi. It is one of the main reasons why girls in the city are not being able to use their full potential to make their dreams come true,” says Neeti.
“Being a Delhi girl, I know how difficult is it when you are left to deal with eve teasing even in broad daylight. There were various opportunities that I got, but couldn’t take them up because my parents used to give me a strict deadline of 7pm. I had to head back home by that time at any cost.”
Neeti, who studied in Miranda House in Delhi University, says, “I have been eve teased many times during my college days. But I used to reply back to a lot of guys. I first used to talk to them nicely; if they did not hear me, I used to shout at them and explain that I am not okay if they were looking at me in a certain way or saying certain things. I have even slapped two guys.”
“I feel very responsible about a girl’s safety and her ambitions because I believe that for girls, their dreams are very special for them. For example, when I started out, my goals were all that mattered to me,” adds Neeti, who has given her voice for a song in the film, Saavi — A Bonded Bride.
Ask her if she comes to Capital very often, and the Ishq Waala Love singer says, “My family and I have shifted to Mumbai few years ago, but, I often visit Delhi for shows.”
