GESTURES LIKE THESE ARE NOT ENOUGH: OM PURI

Even as actors take up the cause of farmers, veteran actor Om Puri, who is currently shooting a film based on farmer suicides, believes that helping farmers financially is not enough. “Itne chotey chotey efforts se kya hoga? This problem is a far bigger one. It cannot be tackled by just helping farmers with money. Maine ` 50,000 de diye, kisi aur ne jaake 1 lakh de diya. This alone will not solve the issue,” says Puri. However, the 64-year-old does not dismiss his colleagues’ efforts. “It is a noble gesture and I’m pleased that people from the industry are helping the farmers,” he says. Puri stresses that giving money is a small gesture when you compare it with the magnitude of the problem. “The rate at which farmers are committing suicides is astounding. It has been happening for a long time. People living in the metros don’t value the amount of hard work that a farmer puts in. Everyone turns a deaf ear towards them. Only the administration can make a difference,” he says.
