Did you just hire a helicopter for your wedding? As fancy as it may sound, it is so passe! Today, your wedding will make the cut only if you have phoren baraatis dressed up in Indian finery, swaying to Bollywood chartbusters.

In a new fad in the city, the well-heeled are now hiring foreign models to attend their weddings as guests. Ala, a 24-year-old from Brazil, who recently attended a big fat wedding in the city, shares, “I was paid ` 5,000 to attend a wedding in Delhi and was told to learn some dance moves. I practised dancing on Bollywood songs for three days. I was then introduced as a guest of the family, along with eight other foreign models. It was great fun.”

The Capital’s leading modelling agencies also say that they are getting a large number of requests from people who want to hire foreign models as guests for their weddings to flaunt their firang connection. “They want foreigners to be a part of their celebration and offer good money in return. We are okay sending our boys and girls if the request comes from known clients, but I often have to turn down offers as it is difficult to ensure the safety and comfort of models,” says Nitin Sarna, founder, Satin Models, a Delhi-based modelling agency that provides foreign models.

And he’s right as sometimes things do get messy. “Some guests try to make advances at us. Since I have had some unpleasant experiences, I ensure that I take a male model friend along whenever I’m paid to attend an Indian wedding,” shares 21-year-old model Andreja from Slovakia.

Talking about the trend of hiring foreigners, hotels in the city and NCR also con- firm that they witness many such weddings. “These foreign guests don’t even know the names of the bride and groom. Sometimes they casually tell us that they are hired models, and are not familiar with the hosts. The idea behind this is to make the wedding look more lavish and to show off their foreign connection,” says Shripal Rathode, MD, Atrium Hotel, that hosts many weddings.

Agencies reveal that the maximum demand for foreign models comes for functions such as sangeet, cocktail and pheras.
