Foods to stay warm dur­ing win­ters

As soon as win­ter ap­proaches, we stock our wardrobe with wool­lens. But it is also im­por­tant to keep our bod­ies warm by in­clud­ing the right food in our diet. Here’s a list of five foods that will keep you warm:

■ Gin­ger: It re­duces high choles­terol and hence is the best choice to keep the body fit dur­ing win­ters. With its an­tibac­te­rial prop­er­ties, it helps treat cough and cold. It can be chewed raw or can be added to soup and dishes to en­hance the flavour.

■ Honey: It is great for com­bat­ing cold and cough dur­ing win­ter. Even if it is sweet, honey doesn’t add calo­ries and keeps the body warm.

■ Nuts: Peanuts, wal­nuts and al­monds are the best source of good choles­terol, vi­ta­mins, fi­bre and Omega-3 fatty acids. They make for es­sen­tial snack­ing dur­ing win­ters, as they are nat­u­rally hot.

■ Cin­na­mon: This spice, when added to a cooked dish, soup or salad, en­hances the flavour and helps fight win­ter viruses.

■ Gar­lic: Its an­tibac­te­rial agents pro­tect from throat in­fec­tions. It also keeps the choles­terol level in check. Add three to four gar­lic cloves daily to cooked dishes.
