They may have started off their Bollywood journey behind the camera, as assistant directors (AD), but now they are on camera, fighting baddies and romancing the ladies.

For actors like Hrithik Roshan, Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Varun Dhawan, Siddharth Malhotra; and newbies like Sooraj Pancholi, Omkar Kapoor and Sakshi Khanna, the AD route has been their way to films.

An AD experience helps youngsters test the waters before taking the plunge.

“It was enlightening to work with Sanjay (Leela Bhansali) LB sir as he has an extremely beautiful vision as a filmmaker. With Farah (Khan) ma’am, I learnt the commercial aspects of a film,” says Omkar, who made his acting debut with Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2.

Ranbir too calls his days with Bhansali “very impactful.” He says: “I think that was the time that I switched from being an aimless slacker boy to somebody who wants to do something in his life relating to films.”

Being on the sets helps one “understand the craft better” as that gives them hands-on practical knowledge. As Siddharth puts it: “I took up assisting to understand the technicalities of filmmaking.”
