Actor Om Puri has lashed out at Aamir Khan, saying that he should have refrained from his comments on intolerance in the country. Puri says that if Aamir actually means what he said, then he is disappointed in the star.

“It is a very callous and irresponsible statement, and Aamir does not realise the implication of it. He is a star, people love him and he has earned a lot from India. A statement like this is instigating Muslims and making them feel insecure,” says Puri.

The actor adds that Aamir’s comments are uncalled for because India has always been very tolerant towards people from all religions and regions. “I feel that India has been the most tolerant country. The British ruled us for so many years and we tolerated this without violence... as Gandhi was there at the time. We have tolerated so many attacks as well, over the years,” he says adding, “In fact, I feel that India is a safe country for Muslims. Look at the other Muslim countries. There have been bomb blasts in mosques while people have been praying... children have been killed in schools,” he says.

Puri says that while he condemns the incident where a man was lynched for allegedly storing beef, he does not feel that it is enough to make everyone in the country feel insecure.
