Back in the 40s-50s, late Raj Kapoor and Nargis starred together in 16 hits including Barsaat (1949), Awara (1951) and Shree 420 (1955). A mention of hit pairs is incomplete without jodis of Dev Anand-Waheeda Rehman, Dharmendra-Hema Malini, Amitabh BachchanRekha and Shah Rukh KhanKajol. The allure of a hit pair is still as strong. How else would you explain a number of hit, young pairs getting repeated by filmmakers of late?

Sushant Singh Rajput will star with Parineeti Chopra, after Shuddh Desi Romance, in Takadum, Aditya Roy Kapur has wrapped up work on OK Jaanu with Shraddha Kapoor. Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt are back together in Badrinath Ki Dulhania (BKD) after Student Of The Year and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, and Ranbir Kapoor will team up with Anushka Sharma in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil; and Katrina Kaif in Jagga Jasoos. He earlier worked with Anushka in Bombay Velvet and with Kat in Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahaani and Raajneeti.

BKD director Shashank Khaitan says casting a hit pair makes things easier for a directors as the actors know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. “They can pick up from where they had left off in their last film. Since there’s no breaking of ice, one can focus on the characters and pushing the envelope.”

Actors agree that a great pairing can go a long way in a film’s final outcome. “Ours is a challenging script and Homi doesn’t compromise on anything. The acting skills that Pari has can only do justice to her role,” says Sushant. Varun and Alia make a similar point. “We share a great relationship; we keep fighting and making up,” he says, while Alia adds: “Varun always wants to push himself and do more, which makes me push myself more.”

Ranveer Singh, who is believed to have bagged Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next Padmavati along with rumoured fiancée Deepika Padukone, says: “The day I know that I am going to do a scene with Deepika; I am not worried as I know that I can trust her. She is a very giving and supportive actor,” says Ranveer, who has worked with Deepika in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela and Bajirao Mastani. ■
