Ak­shay Ku­mar cred­its his in­tegrity for Na­tional Award win; Sonam Kapoor calls hon­our a val­i­da­tion of her hard work

Ac­tor Sonam Kapoor has won the Spe­cial Men­tion at the 64th Na­tional Awards for her role in the film Neerja, which won the Na­tional Award for Best Hindi Film. The ac­tor woke up to the news while shoot­ing in Ma­hesh­war, In­dore.

“I was in shock,” Sonam tells us. “I’m shoot­ing in Ma­hesh­war and we have been on the sets since 6am. I was tak­ing a nap, and when I woke up, there were 40 calls and 100 mes­sages in my phone. I couldn’t un­der­stand why so many peo­ple were con­tact­ing me. I called my mother and asked and she said, ‘Beta, you have won the na­tional award.’”

A Spe­cial Men­tion is spe­cial recog­ni­tion from the Na­tional Awards jury. Neerja, di­rected by Ram Mad­hvani, was a biopic on airhost­ess Neerja Bhanot, who sac­ri­ficed her­self on a flight hi­jacked by ter­ror­ists.
