CHARLIZE FILM SMASHES RECORD
The Fate of the Furious, or Fast & Furious 8, as it’s known in India, opened to over `3,400 crore worldwide. India’s contribution in this: `67 crore
The Fate of the Furious broke the record for the all-time top-grossing opening weekend with $532 million worldwide, which amounts to `3,400 crore. The film narrowly beat out the previous record holder, 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which opened to $529 million.
In India, the movie was no slouch either. According to Box Office Mojo, the film has made $10 million since its Thursday debut, including paid previews beginning on Wednesday evening. That is, `67 crore.
The previous film in the franchise, Furious 7, crossed the `100 crore mark in India when it opened in 2015. Its record was broken by The Jungle Book, which ended its run with approximately `180 crore.
The Vin Diesel-Dwayne Johnson-starrer is the eighth film in the Fast & Furious franchise, which has earned $4.4 billion since its 2001 debut. A ninth instalment is scheduled for 2019, followed by the tenth film in 2021.
