Once a Delhiite, always a Delhiite–– and that holds true for Anshai Lal, (above) director of Phillauri.“Main jab tak Delhi mein tha mujhe uske bahar ki duniya nahi pata thi. I have grown up in the Capital. My friends and family are here and this city has its own charm which is incomparable,” he says.

Being born and brought up in Delhi, the city is clearly reflected in his films. “Aap jis jagah se belong karte hai uski chaap aapke kaam main aati hai. Chahe main kahi pe bhi movie shoot karu aur koi bhi culture dikhayu, Delhi reflect ho hi jata hai,” he quips. After his schooling from DPS Mathura, Delhi, and graduation from IP University, the director went to Mumbai to try his luck in Bollywood. “When I entered the film industry, there was no social media around. I visited each and every production house to try my luck, that was the only way to find a job. Varna aap cold text bhejte raho aur wait karte raho,” says Lal who has worked as an assistant director in films such as Dostana (2008) and Pyaar Ke Side Effects (2006). Phillauri was his directorial debut, which is Anushka Sharma’s production, after NH10.

After more than five years in Mumbai, Lal feels that the city has a charm of its own. “The city has a big heart, Though space is an issue, with good people around, it could be managed,” he says.
