Star power at the 70th Cannes Film Festival
Astarry, starry night indeed! The 70th Cannes Film Festival opened on Wednesday with stars such as Will Smith and Marion Cotillard. This time, the security measures were tighter than ever at the festival. There were efforts to restrict easy access. Along with more metal detectors, there was an anti-drone system as well. This is also the first festival held since the truck attack in the city of Nice which killed 86 people June last year.
The night began with Arnaud Desplechin’s Ismael’s Ghosts, with Mathieu Amalric, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Cotillard. While some films were praised, critics weren’t enamored with Desplechin’s farcical, self-referential drama about a filmmaker visited by a long missing ex-wife.
Actor Monica Bellucci presided over an opening ceremony that included a slight dig at the best picture envelope flub that had concluded this year’s Academy Awards ceremony. The evening ended with a new envelope being brought out The interaction dissolved into a dance that ended with Bellucci kissing Alex Lutz.
