IT’S WOMEN POWER ON DAY EIGHT
Two films based on civil wars, with women at the centre of the stories, got the limelight on the eighth day of the Cannes Film Festival
Films screened on the eighth day at Cannes received mixed responses. Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled garnered appreciation for its female spin on the Clint Eastwood film of the same name, based on the American Civil War. This remake portrays actor Colin Farrell as an injured soldier who takes shelter in an all-girls boarding school. The film also features Elle Fanning, Kirsten Dunst and Nicole Kidman. This is Kidman’s fourth film screening at Cannes this year.
Meanwhile, Jude Ratnam’s documentary, Demons in Paradise, which focusses on the Sri Lankan Civil War, was also screened at the festival. It’s based on the bloodbath that drove Tamils to take up arms in the three decade-long insurgency.
Other films screened include Jacques Doillon’s Rodin, which didn’t impress the critics much.
