Mena Massoud unveiled as Aladdin
Disney has finally found its Aladdin in newcomer Mena Massoud (far left) for the live-action reboot. Earlier, it had been reported that Indian actor Siddharth Gupta was chosen to play Aladdin — but the casting hadn’t been finalised then.
Will Smith will play Genie and Naomi Scott (left) will portray Princess Jasmine in the Guy Ritchie-directed movie, Disney announced at D23 Expo, a showbiz event held over the weekend.
Photos of the three actors were screened at the Anaheim Convention Center, California. Massoud, who is of Egyptian origin, tweeted: “So honoured and grateful for the opportunity to help bring this magical story to life once again. Let’s get to work! #Aladdin #Disney.”
Disney’s original animated movie Aladdin (1992) was a comic take on the Arabic folk tale of a young man granted three wishes by a genie trapped in a lamp.
Aladdin was the highestgrossing film of 1992, and won Academy Awards for Best Score and Best Song for A Whole New World, performed by Brad Kane and Lea Salonga.
